2D Design: Self Portrait

I hadn't used Illustrator for at least a year before creating this portrait. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I still retained much of what I knew about the platform and had a fairly easy time creating this piece. I started by importing a picture from my band's most recent show. Next, I used the pen tool to trace over my desired paths, using a Coolors palette (that I changed slightly) to fill in the shapes. Finally, I created music notes using the same technique, arranging them into the final composition. I'm very happy with how this turned out. While I'm not someone who is enthusiastic about graphic design, I found that having a palette chosen ahead of time greatly aided the process - it was one less thing to think about. Overall, I hope to blend these techniques with mediums we explored previously to create more nuanced works in the future.

  1. I love this palette so dang much; it reminds me of this tessellation puzzle game I had as a wee child in the late 1900s. Your self-portrait is so joyful and playful. I especially love the blocky aesthetic. Viva la pen tool!!!!

  2. Hi Jane, this is such a great self portrait! You were not only able to capture your own likeness so well, but I enjoyed how you used the color palette to your advantage. Through this palette, and with the inclusion of the music notes, I am able to tell a little bit about your personality and interests. That is so impressive! If you hadn’t mentioned that you were not very enthusiastic about graphic design, I never would have thought otherwise.
