Scanography - Self-Portraits and Games

For these two series of images I decided to experiment with some of the techniques we overviewed in class such as warping, stretching, and condensing. It was a lot of fun experimenting with the themes I chose - self-portraits and games. I chose materials that would provide contrast, color, and different transparencies in order to create balanced compositions. I think both series explored black and white contrast with pops of color, however, the games series utilized varied cropping and scaling. It was surprising to me how one image could hold so many different textures and colors. I especially enjoyed how moving and reflective objects created a rainbow effect.

In a K-12 classroom, students of any age could engage with this process. For older students I might challenge them to think about themes and composition as I did, and for younger students I would give them an array of materials and techniques to explore. This project was new and exciting, and I hope to continue experimenting with it and perhaps combining it with other mediums.
